Jaguar Goes GM with Build 6C115
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
August 1st 2002

X.2 soon to go to the presses.

Surprising even insiders, Jaguar (OS X 10.2) has been declared gold master status.
Think Secret/A> and other sources suggest that Apple anticipates overwhelming demand
for the OS upgrade and want to ensure adequate supply in the distributor channel.

Think Secret says that a couple more days of final candidates might have been
expected, but Apple is concerned with meeting its shipping date and not running out of
stock. Earlier, Ron Carlson and IGM readers reported that Amazon.com had pulled its
$50-off Jaguar offer, citing enormous demand for X.2. It is unclear whether Amazon
will be able to keep offering the discounted upgrade as its current stock order is
exhausted.

A point Think Secret reiterates is that Jaguar will not include iCal and iSync, the
new .mac apps Apple demonstrated at MWNY in July.

Analysis: How Jaguar will run on older hardware is another question, particularly as
many PowerBooks and iBooks do not have the minimum graphics subsystems necesary to run
Quartz Extreme. When OS 8.5 was released in late 1998, many Apple retailers displayed
signs saying ''designed for G3 Macs'' in response to customer complaints of the
slowness of the OS on pre-G3 systems. Jaguar may not make your older Mac run worse,
but if past experience of Apple OS upgrades is any indication, high-performance
systems need as many clock cycles as you can give them.
