Motorola''s Lack of Progress to Blame for OS X on x86 Speculation

Lies, damn lies and...speculation.
Matthew Rothenberg takes a pot shot at rumor-slash-speculation on the Mac web this
week in his eWeek column, citing all the details (we) didn''t know about the
architecture of the new Power Mac G4s.
Rothenberg describes the MHz leap as a fairly "puny delta" between the 1GHz and
1.25GHz DP models, the top dogs of the previous and current Power Mac ranges, but also
argues it masks the significant improvements made under the hood of these latest Macs.
Matthew gives thumbs-up to DPs across the range, the adoption of the Radeon 9000
graphics cards [in some models], DDR, multiple independent buses and the 167MHz system
bus.
The big disappointment, he says, is the CPU speed, and for that we can blame Moto.
From this, he extrapolates that of course the web has turned to speculating whether
Apple will shift to x86 in the next few years: Moto isn''t worth speculating about
anymore.
Analysis: A couple of points: first, it''s not beyond the bounds of probability that
Apple has a ''Star Trek'' OS X-on-x86 running somewhere in a development lab. Second,
the Mac-ROMed x86 box that can run Mac exclusives or anything x86 you care to load
isn''t an awfully bad idea now, is it? If you could only buy such a box from Apple
(and that would be set in concrete).
Second, while touting some of the new PM''s good points, he misses a few: the multiple
optical bays and extra drive bays are real news and make desktop Macs boxes that could
really be fitted out with a lot of fruit. Like a DVD-R and DVD+RW for companies that
have to work with both. Like a nice RAID array.
Sure, there will be faster processors that can really use all that throughput, and
maybe the current PMs are merely a stop gap until the 7470 gets on stream. But
they''re not a bad office to work out of at all.
