Apple: Tevanian Disbands OS 9 Group
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 16th 2002

Some job losses, most redeployed in reshuffle.

In his column on eWeek, Matthew Rothenberg reports that Apple has disbanded its Mac
OS 9 development group, and redeployed employees to other divisions within the firm.

The article states that Senior VP of Software Engineering, Avie Tevanian, has directed
the reorganization. On Friday, Steven Glass, a vice-president of the OS engineering
group, was moved to a new position within the Apple-owned PowerSchool.

Glass was on Steve Wozniak''s development team for the Apple //gs, released in 1986.
Other OS 9 team members will be placed in the Platform Technologies group, with OS X
development a key responsibility of the team. According to Rothenberg, Tevanian said
Apple were still looking for a new manager to head up OS X development.

The article also says that Mac OS quality assurance, which was a discrete group
previously, will now sit under the software engineering umbrella.

Some job losses are involved, Rothenberg''s sources say. A number of people will not
be replaced, while others have been reassigned to the ''Marklar'' project, purportedly
Apple''s X-on-x86 mule.

Analysis: Not surprising, but there will still be at least some OS 9 software -
QuickTime 6.0 is a prime example, which still runs on 8.6. In many respects, it''s
sign to users, developers and the markets that Apple''s OS development efforts are
concentrated purely upon OS X. The fact that January''s Macs will no longer boot into
OS 9 is the final nail in the coffin of the classic Mac OS.
