FileMaker, BlueWorld release v6.0 tools
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 18th 2002
The two company''s show again coordinated efforts to move the platform forward
FileMaker has announced that FileMaker Developer 6 is now shipping. This release is
available in "Worldwide English," which is to this observer''s knowledge an entirely
new form of the language.
FileMaker Developer 6 is the tool of choice for commercial and corporate developers
creating custom FileMaker solutions to be deployed across workgroups, distributed as
royalty-free runtime applications or published for the Web.
North American customers can purchase FileMaker Developer 6 for $499 (SRP). Licensed
North American users of single-user packages of FileMaker Developer 5 or FileMaker
Developer 5.5 who purchase FileMaker Developer 6, are eligible for a $100 or C$150
in-box mail-in rebate. FileMaker Developer 6 system requirements can be found here.
The next level
Blue World have announced that Lasso Professional 6 is shipping. This iteration
introduces support for numerous industry standards while maintaining the ease-of-use
and robust security that have won Lasso the support of thousands of Web developers
worldwide.
"Lasso Professional 6 provides Web application developers a tool specifically designed
to meet their most demanding needs without compromising ease-of-use, offering
unprecedented productivity and flexibility," said Bill Doerrfeld, CEO of Blue World.
"Compliance with the latest industry standards positions Lasso Professional 6 at the
forefront within the rapidly evolving Web application server tool arena."
Lasso Professional 6 provides the features needed in advanced Web application server
development. Adding to features spearheaded in Lasso Professional 5, including a
built-in MySQL database, an object-oriented programming environment, ability to create
compiled and encrypted applications, a comprehensive interface for built-in security
and administration, a distributed architecture and more.
A detailed listing of features available in Lasso Professional 6 is available via the
Lasso Professional 6 Features document -- here (.pdf via FTP).
Lasso Professional 6 is immediately available for purchase direct from Blue World
Store for $1199 for the electronic download edition and $1299 for the boxed edition
(includes printed manuals, CD-ROM and box). Registered v5.0 customers may upgrade to
Lasso Professional 6 for $399 for the download edition and $499 for the boxed edition.
Registered customers who own a license of Lasso Web Data Engine 3.x may upgrade to
Lasso Professional 6 for $999 for the download edition and $1099 for the boxed edition.
Recently, Blue World announced that it would discontinue sales and support for its Web
Data Engine.
Editor''s note: Worldwide English is probably FileMaker''s term for "international
English," though why they chose a different moniker is beyond me. FileMaker is the
world''s most popular (standalone) database application and is perhaps the only tool
that allows mere mortals to publish directly to the web. Moreover, with Lasso tools,
users can put together truly professional solutions that require less time, effort and
money than say a comparable Oracle solution.
