Apple Integrates Final Cut Pro with High-End Production Systems

FCP consolidates its grip on digital video.
Final Cut Pro (FCP) will shortly be adopting the Advanced Authoring Format (AAF),
which will allow FCP to exchange files with high-end post-production systems,
according to a story at IBC.
Bill Hudson, Apple''s Strategic Accounts Manager for professional systems, said that
"It''s critical that Apple continues to be a full part of the production and post
production process, and AAF is the future for media interchange,"
Dave Edwards, Apple''s director of product marketing for professional applications
also said that Apple''s strong support for formats, such as FireWire and QuickTime,
has helped make Apple''s products interoperable with other players in the industry.
IBC says that AAF is incorporated into a number of shipping products, such as
graphics, compositing, editing, news production, archiving and colour grading.
Panasonic, Quantel and BBC Technology are some of the firms deploying the technology.
SGI has also just joined the AAF alliance. SGI is a maker of graphics workstations
used for high-end post-production video.
AAF compliance means FCP will be able to exchange files with SGI and Quantel
workstations, which will enable FCP users on PowerBooks and Power Mac G4s to do
offline editing in FCP.
Analysis: If anything, this will cement Apple''s position in the middle/high-end
viideo field. We haven''t seen any numbers lately, but it''s a pretty good bet that
Adobe''s Premiere hasn''t anything like FCP''s market penetration in the Mac video
market (witness no X version).
