Sonnet Announces G4/700, G3/500 Upgrades for PCI Macs

Muscular G4 power for old Beige Power Macs.
Sonnet Technologies today announced G4 upgrades up to 700MHz and G3 upgrades up to
500MHz for Beige PCI Macs. Included are a number of Mac clone machines which were
previously thought to be limited to G3 processors.
The release follows Sonnet's Crescendo G4/800, which was released in August. The new
Crescendos use Motorola's 745X AlitVec G4 and feature 1MB of L3 backside cache.
The upgrades are all compatible with OS X (including Jaguar, 10.2), using Sonnet's PCI
X software ($29.95).
The G4/700 PCI is compatible with the following Macs and clones:
- Power Mac 7300, 7500, 7600, 85xx, 8600, 95xx (including 9500/180MP), 9600 (including
9600/200/MP)
- Workgroup Server 7350, 8550, 9650
- Daystar Genesis, Millennium Series
- PowerCenter, PowerCenter Pro, PowerCurve, PowerTower, PowerTower Pro, PowerWave
- UMAX J700/S900
The Crescendo/PCI G4 700/1M will be available from October 15 and carries and
estimated street price of $349.95.
The Crescendo/PCI G3/500 has a 512K L2 cache and works with the following models:
- Power Mac 7300, 7500, 7600, 85xx, 8600, 95xx, 9600
- Workgroup Server 7350, 8550, 9650
- Daystar Genesis, Millennium Series
- PowerCenter, PowerCenter Pro, PowerCurve, PowerTower, PowerTower Pro, PowerWave
- UMAX J700/S900
The G3/500 is also available from October 15, and will be priced at $149.95.
Analysis: If you have a lot invested in legacy equipment, but want to move to OS X
and/or get AltiVec power, these are reasonably-priced alternatives, particularly
compared to a new eMac. Users with a need for PCI SCSI and other specialized PCI cards
might want to give these upgrades a close look.
