Apple announces .Mac for education
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 1st 2002
Although the price is better, a minimum of 10 subscriptions is required and the specs
are somewhat reduced
Apple has quietly rolled .Mac for Education. This latest offering provides "powerful
ways to safeguard students and educators work with industry-leading virus
protection, easy-to-use backup software and more."
This offer enables education institutions to purchase an unlimited number of .Mac
one-year subscriptions via purchase order (.ME can't be ordered online) at a special
education institution price of $59 per user (minimum of 10 subscriptions).
.Mac for Education membership includes:
 50MB of online storage with iDisk for storing and transferring files;
 A Mac.com IMAP email account with 10MB of storage;
 HomePage web page builder for easy web publishing and hosting;
 Backup software for archiving your important files to iDisk, CD, or DVD;
 Virex industry-leading virus protection from McAfee; and
 Online support for members.
According to the mothership, existing iTools subscribers must purchase and activate
.Mac for Education by October 14, 2002 for uninterrupted access to the information in
an existing iTools account. After October 14, 2002, accounts that have not been
upgraded to .Mac will be deactivated. To reinstate an account you must upgrade the
account to .Mac by October 31, 2002 and only accounts that have been upgraded to .Mac
will retain their data after that date.
Once a purchase order has been received and processed by Apple, a Getting Started
package will be mailed to the ship-to address on the purchase order. The package will
include a license agreement, the number of activation keys equal to the number of
licenses purchased and instructions for upgrading existing accounts or activating new
accounts.
Editor's note: With Apple's waning influence and market share in the education market
this offer seems, well, exceedingly cheap (note memo to self in comments). A much
better approach would be $59 for four years with a choice of one three Mac, Apple or
OS X tee-shirts free of charge. Also, of the $59 fee, $10 is returned to school in the
form of money off the purchase of Apple equipment.
Apple, you're getting your butt kicked in education. Loosen up the purse strings and
bribe them already!
