NeoOffice for OS X Gets Working Port
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 7th 2002

Mm...7.5 million lines of code.

NeoOffice is now up and running, but is alpha-quality software at present. The
O'Reilley Network provides an interesting rundown of how such a huge application
(240MB) was ported to OS X.

You can even download a development version (77MB) or request a CD, but be warned:
the app is not at all stable at present and needs a lot of work before it's ready for
prime time.

The development version of NeoOffice has the following system requirements:

In order to run NeoOffice binaries, you will need:

 MacOS X 10.2 or higher, 10.2.1 recommended
 384 MB memory
 230 MB free disk space
 G4 recommended
lotsa patience...it's slow and crashes a lot!

In order to build NeoOffice binaries, you will need

 MacOS X 10.2 or higher, 10.2.1 recommended
 384 MB memory
 2 GB free disk space
fastest machine you can get recommended
even more patience...it can take a day!

It's worth reading over the significant known issues on the download page.

Analysis: Worth a read, even from a layperson's point of view, just to get some
insight into how Unix apps are ported to OS X and how an Aqua interface is put on the
front end. Gotta admire these guys' efforts.
