RealOne for X beta 2 arrives
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

The more things change, the more they stay the same

RealNetworks has release the second beta of its RealOne Player for Mac OS X. The new
version adds premium RealOne subscription content and other new features to Mac users.

Specifically the features include:

 Subscription-based content for access to exclusive content (i.e. sports,
entertainment and news), $9.95 a month;
 Another subscription-based service, RealOne RadioPass, is also supported. A
subscription service that provides feeds of 50 ad-free stations of different genres,
it costs $8.95 per month for the 64Kbps feed; a 32Kbps feed with fewer stations is
available for $5.95;
 New pop-down access to RealOne Home for exclusive content, broadband media and more;
 Media searching for access to an index of streaming and downloadable media; and
 A new Favorites menu.

You can download the here.

Editor's note: Back in July when the first beta of RealOne for X arrived, I panned it
for being more of the same second-rate code foisted on Mac users for years by the
company. Again, my informal testing revealed nearly the same experience -- five
clicked links before a station played. I tuned in BBC 2 and that stream sounded like
1997 -- compression artifacts, noticeable hiccups and the connection dropped after 10
minutes. It's sad that this product is so necessary and it's galling they have the
nerve to ask money for "premium" content.

The bottom line? iTunes rocks in comparison. Long live mp3 radio!
