Famous Hacker's Laptop for Sale
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 9th 2002

$5,000 and it's yours.

Well-known hacker Kevin Mitnick, barred from earning money from his book detailing his
crimes, has decided to auction some of the portable computers he used to hack into
networks during the 1990s, according to CNN.

A former fugitive from the FBI, Mitnick hacked into Sun, Motorola, Novell and Nokia
networks. Now he's auctioning his Toshiba laptop on eBay, with bids currently standing
at $5,000.

Anoher Toshiba is also yours for the buying, with this one covered with authentic
fingerprint dust. Both laptops are signed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and
Mitnick himself. One message inscribed by Woz reads "free Kevin".

Mitnick entered a guilty plea to wire fraud in 2000 and he will be on unsupervised
release in January 2003. He has written a book The Art of Deception, for which Woz
supplied the foreword. Howver, he cannot claim profits from the book until 2010,
according to the CNN story.

Analyst: Cyberterrorist or prankster? The FBI think the former, but clearly Woz shares
the latter sentiment. Not Woz's first involvement with an infamous hacker who did time
either: remember Cap'n Crunch? He spent most of his time calling long distance on
other people's lines, as did Woz. Cap'n Crunch wanted to turn the Apple II into a
phone hacking box - much to the horror of more mature minds, like Mark Markkula. When
Crunch got out of prison, Woz had rejoined Apple to work on the IIgs in the mid-1980s,
and Crunch had ideas about a plug-in card for the IIgs which would turn it into the
ultimate phone-hacking machine.
