Apple adds 'double your memory' promo

With new models in the wings and sales targets to hit, the mothership gears up for the
holiday shopping season
Apple has added a new promotional for that purchase new Macs -- "purchase any
Macintosh from October 10, 2002 through December 31, 2002 and double the base RAM
configuration for only $40." The "Double Your Memory" page includes a full listing of
the conditions and restrictions.
With memory prices in the toilet, the value of this promo depends largely on
base-memory configuration of the model you're upgrading. For example, paying $40 to
add 128MB to an entry-level iMac isn't that good of a deal given that you can purchase
a 128MB DIMM for about $25 (FYI DealMac lists updated memory prices).
However, as memory size increases, the numbers turn in your favor:
� A 256MB DIMM sells for about $32; and
� A 512MB DIMM sells for about $85.
Assuming either time spent purchasing (retail) and/or shipping costs, the value on the
256MB DIMM for $40 can be reckoned as break even and the 512MB upgrade puts you ahead
by about $45.
This offer is good on all new Macs, except the entry-level iBook and the maximum
memory a user can purchase under the deal is 512MB. However, if one chooses to add
more than 512MB, Apple will discount the first 512MB and charge full price for the
remaining memory.
Another caveat is that Apple reserves the right to install the memory you purchase as
more than one DIMM.
