PC Mag: Xserve 'defies categorization'

Apple hardware continues to earn praise from Windoze-centric pubs
PC Magazine reviewers Robert P. Lipschutz and Brian Kenny say the Xserve "does many
things well and at an affordable price ... a powerful file, Web, custom application,
videoconferencing, and streaming audio and video server." That's quite a mouthful for
the mothership's first rack-mountable (1U) server and for two guys more at home in the
guts of a Wintel box.
Specifically, Lipschutz and Kenny praise Xserve's:
� No-hidden cost approach to licensing the server software;
� Use of inexpensive IDE hard drives on separate controllers;
� Inclusion of powerful open-source applications;
� Flexibility vis-a-vis its smooth, easy-to-use GUI-based management tools, as well as
instant access to the command line; and
� Low-cost in comparison to similarly-equipped PC hardware.
On the last point, the reviewers stated that a comparable Dell PowerEdge costs
hundreds of dollars more even before one adds Redmond's escalating, per-seat "server
tax."
Summing up Lipschutz and Kenny said, "In short, the Xserve is an impressive server
with a multitude of potential uses, excellent ease of use, plenty of storage, and a
software configuration that allows for an unlimited number of connections -- all at a
truly reasonable price."
Well put, gentlemen.
Editor's note: Apple has been remarkably silent about the Xserve since its release at
the end of June. We got a short blurb about how may pre-orders were taken, but nothing
since on what looks like a hot seller for the company. Another noticeable silence has
been the near utter lack of negative user reports. Yes, a few have mentioned the
unit's rather loud cooling fans, but other than that not wisp of whinging.
