Comdex: Wireless to Dominate

MS headlines, but wireless, DVD-R/DVD+RW and nVidia will make a big showing.
Wireless technology is the big theme at the forthcoming Comdex Fall show, which
opens Sunday in Las Vegas.
MS Chairman Gates will keynote the show, with TabletPC the centerpiece of the
proceedings. According to c|net news, Microsoft will also make presentations on how
the company is incorporating wireless technology into its software. A new application
addition to the Office XP suite is also expected to be announced.
Redmond is also touting the growing success of its PocketPC platform, with Dell
launching its Axim line and HP unveiling two new iPaq models. However, rival handheld
maker, Palm Inc., plans to announce another new licencee of Palm OS [It couldn't
be...could it?]
While Sony and Intel are giving this show a miss, Apple is represented - at least in a
forum: the DVD Forum, that is. The rival DVD-R/RW/RAM Forum and the DVD+RW Alliance
will hold separate presentations outlining the respective benefits and progress of
their competing technologies.
nVidia is also expected to strike back at ATI with the announcement of its GeForce 5 -
a release date is anticipated, as delays postponed the original plan for an October
release.
Analysis: While Apple urges users to 'switch', wouldn't Comdex be an ideal place for
Cupertino to wow the nay-sayers and the just-plain-curious about Apple technologies?
OS X is already establishing a niche among Linux devotees; there's no reason why PC
users wouldn't be similarly enthused about tech like Rendezvous.
After all, they demanded the iPod, right?
