PowerBooks: Magma CardBus-PCI Compatibility in OS 10.2.2
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 14th 2002

High-end PCI card compatibility for Pismo and TiBook.

Magma has announced that OS 10.2.2 supports Magma's CardBus-PCI expansion chassis for
PowerBooks. Magma offers a number of kits which provide two or more half or full-size
PCI slots for PowerBook users.

One market niche for the Magma is the Pro audio user, who needs PowerBook portability,
but also needs access to specialized PCI audio cards, from makers such as Emagic (now
owned by Apple), Korg and Yamaha. Video cards such as ATI's Xclaim and Media 100xr/xs
are also compatible with the Magma expansion chassis.

The 1, 2 or 4-slot products are compatible with all PowerBook G4s (Titanium) and the
G3 FireWire (Pismo). There is no support for the PowerBook G3 Bronze (Lombard) [This
is not to say it doesn't work; it is merely 'unsupported'.

Single-slot expansion chassis start at $995. Either OS 9 or OS X 10.2.2 are required.

Analysis: Not cheap, but essential is you're a portable AV pro. I also seem to recall
that earlier versions of the Magma (you can find them on ebay) work with the
Wallstreet. Not to mention the coolness quotient if you want to add, say, a 5-port
FireWire card to your 'Book.
