Software Architects Releases GreatVideo 1.5

Capable, budget-priced alternative to DVD Studio Pro.
While iDVD only works with Macs with internal SuperDrives, Software Architects'
release of GreatVideo overcomes the problem by providing support for third-party
DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM drives.
GreatVideo does what iDVD refuses to do: write to external drives. The alternative is
to invest in the pricey and professional DVD Studio Pro.
GreatVideo 1.5 provides one-step DVD video file creation. Version 1.5 adds MPEG-2
compression and will convert data to .vob files (DVD Video Player format). Once burned
to DVD, the discs are playable on any consumer DVD video player or Mac/PC with DVD
video playback.
Software Architects also touts GreatVideo's ability to convert files to 21
industry-standard video file formats, including Sorenson, Motion JPEG and Intel Indeo
Video.
GreatVideo utilizes QuickTime to convert to various file formats, so its output files
are readable in Apple's Final Cut Pro and Adobe's Premiere [and probably any
QuickTime-aware video player and/or editor].
GreatVideo also supports selecting the compression rate, number of key frames per
second, bit rate, and color as allowed by specific video formats.
GreatVideo 1.5 requires QuickTime 4.0 or later and is available now for $99.95.
Analysis: Some of Software Architects' products do support OS X, but this isn't one of
them. While this is a very useful addition to your OS 9 toolkit - particularly if you
want to share an external DVD-R/+R drive with several Macs or PCs - Macs which will
boot in X only next January won't find it of use. But for those using OS 9 for DV,
this is a very competitive price, particularly as iDVD is not only restricted to
internal SuperDrives, but also comes only with new Macs.
