Radioio streams MPEG-4 audio live
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 6th 2002
For an eclectic mix of music that's crystal clear, theres no better source
radioio is a QuickTime-powered Internet-only radio station that brings the crystalline
quality of MPEG-4 audio. Available to the world + dog via the good efforts of Apple,
Limelight Networks and ioMediaPartners, this slick media production began as a tiny
"hobbiest project" and aims to become "the largest internet-only radio station."
"We believe strongly that MPEG-4 will very soon become the industry standard for
webcasting. It is already becoming the industry standard for the delivery of audio and
video via cellular in much of Europe and most of Asia," enthuses the station's webpage.
Streams come to the world via QuickTime Broadcaster, QuickTime Streaming Server 4 and
the QuickTime MPEG-4 codec, and even to these addled ears the audio quality is
exceptional -- the low-quality stream is nearly pitch perfect.
To listen for free (a number of for-pay plans are available as well), you'll need to
register and then log-in on the radioio site. After doing so, click the the
"low-quality mp3" link on the left-hand side of the page, and the stream will open and
play in iTunes or your designated Internet-audio app.
Editor's note: Congratulations to radioio and especially Apple for creating auditory
tour de force. We need more services like this one -- it's the next big thing in
streaming. This is a major effort to jump through all of the appropriate hoops and
still succeed commercially.
Do have a listen and then sound off here.
