OWC Cuts all FireWire Hard Drive Prices
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 31st 2003

Up to 200GB of fast, convenient, portable storage.

Other World Computing has reduced prices by up to $50 across the range of its Mercury
Elite Pro external FireWire hard drives. OWC are passing on price cuts resulting from
their volume purchases directly to their customers.

The Mercury Elite Pro range all have 7,200rpm hard drives, with capacities ranging
from 40GB to 200GB. All the 120GB and larger drives have 8MB of cache, and the
external case measures 1.5-inches x 9.0-inches x 5.5-inches. Weight is under 3 pounds.

The new, revised pricing is as follows:

       200GB 7200RPM model w/8MBs cache: was $449.99; now $419.99
       180GB 7200RPM model w/8MBs cache: was $399.99; now $349.99
       120GB 7200RPM model w/8MBs cache: was $309.99; now $279.99
       120GB 7200RPM model w/2MBs cache: was $299.99; now $259.99
       80GB 7200RPM model w/2MBs cache: $199.99
       60GB 7200RPM model w/2MBs cache: $179.99
       40GB 7200RPM model w/2MBs cache: $159.99

"These price reductions are possible because our costs dropped," said Larry O'Connor,
president of OWC. "We work hard to provide our customers with the best values on the
market. And while the previous prices represented a great value, the new prices on our
Mercury Elite Pro FireWire storage solutions are an even better value because we are
passing the savings directly on to our customers."

The Mercury Elite Pro drives all ship with Intech's HD SpeedTools, a FireWire cable,
external power adapter and a 2-year warranty from OWC. Mac OS 8.6 or later is
required, and the Elite Pro drives also run on any FireWire-equipped Window 98 or
later system.

Analysis: If you can find a use for 200GB of space (how many hours of DV is that?),
these are highly competitive prices, and HD SpeedTools thrown into the bargain makes
it all the more worthwhile. And here I was thinking
