Destineer takes over MacSoft from Infogrames

Mac games market continues its evolution
Thursday Destineer and Infogrames announced the acquisition of MacSoft, the Mac
publishing unit of Infogrames. The move brings Desinteer's founder Peter Tamte full
circle back to the company he founded. The deal comes amid troubles at Infogrames with
large debt loads, mainly from a long buying spree of other game publishers. Last year,
MacSoft was scaled down as its Infogrames parent tried to trim costs.
The deal will bring the current and future library of MacSoft/Infogrames titles under
Destineer. Destineer said it will publish all games under the better known brand of
MacSoft. Destineer stated that it plans to publish at least 10 major Mac titles in
2003. Known games include aster of Orion III, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege and
Halo.
"We are investing very aggressively in the Macintosh market right now because we
believe Mac OS X, iLife(TM) and other new Apple products are energizing the Mac
community," according to Destineer President Peter Tamte. "In fact, MacSoft's titles
from Infogrames and Microsoft this year will give MacSoft the strongest one-year
lineup of games in the history of the Macintosh industry. 2003 is going to be a great
year for Mac game players."
One of Destineer's goals has been to bring Microsoft game titles to the Mac, such as
the released Links LS, upcoming Halo, and someday MS FlightSim package. On the other
hand, one of MacSoft's assets was access to Infogrames vast library of titles for
porting to the Mac. The good news is that Destineer stated that they will have first
rights to all Infogrames titles, perhaps keeping that river flowing.
Analysis:
While interesting, probably not too surprising. No doubt Infogrames is looking to
lighten its overhead while getting an infusion of cash, although terms of the deal
where not disclosed. The folks at MacSoft always were dedicated to the Mac platform,
regardless who was at the helm, but perhaps now the company can focus more on the
platform.
