OmniWeb 4.2 beta released
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
February 4th 2003

One third-party browser maker keeps the updates coming

The Omni Group has released a beta update, v4.2, for OmniWeb, the web browser built
exclusively for X in the face of the gathering Safari juggernaut.

This latest update adds a number of features intended to improve user experience and
bring greater compatibility with web servers. New preferences have been added to
improve the process of downloading files and to allow the management of Internet
plug-ins. A new 'Send Link' function makes it easier to share a webpage via email and
a new 'Zoomed Text Editor' lets you input large amounts of text into forms more
easily.

Additionally, support for the Shared Menus protocol has been added allowing other
popular Internet applications such as URL Manager Pro to integrate with OmniWeb.

Lastly, OmniWeb provides a wide array of unique browsing features: the ability to
disable JavaScript popup windows, flexible cookie preferences, bookmarks that can
check themselves for updates, a source view window that can edit as well as display
source, very customizable ad-filtering preferences, and a powerful feature called
Shortcuts which lets you visit favorite web pages, do search engine queries, and other
handy tasks using just a few keystrokes in the address bar. OmniWeb also has an
intuitive History search that allows users to search their browsing history by text,
rather than by URL or page title, and a built-in spell checker that works in all web
forms.

OmniWeb is essentially shareware and carries a $29.95 price tag.

The OmniGroup makes a range of X-only applications and developer tools.

Editor's note: This update has likely been planned for weeks. However, it's good to
see Omni releasing fresh updates for its browser.
