Apple, Microsoft in Talks to Resolve Anti-Trust Dispute

The two old enemies and business partners ranged against one another once more.
Bloomberg reports that Apple and Microsoft are in talks to resolve a dispute between
the two firms over the terms of the California anti-trust settlement.
The lawsuits resulted in an agreement that Microsoft would donate $1.1 billion 'in
kind' - i.e., in software and computers - to 4,700 Californian schools. Apple
protested the settlement, arguing it discriminated in favor of Microsoft products,
such as Windows. However, the original terms of the settlement meant that schools
could order Mac versions of Office if they chose.
According to Bloomberg's story, Redmond may give Apple some of what it wants - cash to
schools, rather than MS software and rerurbed computers, which are likely to be PCs.
"Microsoft would love to have this behind them so if it looks like Apple is going to
stand in the way, they'll try and satisfy them,' one MS analyst said to Bloomberg's.
Any Apple-Microsoft agreement will be subject to approval by a judge of the San
Francisco Superior Court.
