Introducing the LiPod (the Linux iPod)

Ever wanted to run your iPod on Unix? No, not OS X. Another *nix. Linux.
Well, you can you know.
A story at Wired details how one user got Linux running on his iPod - and this was
without documentation, without developer tools and certainly no help line at Cupertino.
Linux Man Bernard Leach managed to hack inside the closed system that is the iPod,
which means, conceivably, that you could tell the iPod all sorts of things that it
isn't supposed to know.
Such as "I'm connecting a keyboard to your headphone jack. Geddit?" (iPod nods.
Wearily).
Leach managed to get a trmmed-down version of Linux running on the iPod after weeks of
figuring out how it works. The whole thing is not much more than 'proof of concept'
right now,, but does boot up in Linux.
And here's a concept: connect 2 iPods mano-a-mano. That's FireWire-to-FireWire.
Exchange files. Wow.
A portable Linux iPod? Running free software? That's enough to scare the pants off
Palm. Maybe.
But we bet Mr. Leach violated several EULAs doing this. If he didn't, we're certain
there's a law firm out there that will state unequivocally that he did.
We like the way Wired concluded this story:
"Apple did not respond to requests for comment."
We bet they didn't.
