IBM: AMD Will Be Dead in 5 Years

Big Blue thinks the chip competition will thin out to just two.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will be out of the chip market within five years,
predicts Bill Zeitler, Senior Vice President & Group Executive, Server Group. Zeitler
made the comments to Fortune magazine, and the article is quoted in an Inquirer story.

Zeitler said that Intel and IBM would be the only players left in a few years, as the
market wasn't big enough for more than two competitors. Neverthless, AMD is staking
its future on its next-generation 64-bit 'Hammer' processor. IBM is one of AMD's
partners, and uses some of its CPUs in some IBM PCs. The two firms are also developing
"65 and 45nm nanometer chips produced on 300mm silicon wafers", according to The
Inquirer
Analysis: Interestingly, IBM doesn't mention Motorola. Are we to assume they'll be out
of the desktop microprocessor business? Maybe it does mean IBM's about to get into the
chip business in a serious way, head-to-head with Intel. Regardless, the sooner we get
IBM's PPC 970s and dispose of Moto, the better.
