Apple Australia Looks for New Chief

Apple Australia Managing Director, Ben Bowley, is leaving the company to pursue his
own business interests, Mac columnist Garry Barker writes in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Bowley succeeded Di Ryall, who retired two years ago. Bowley assumed the MD position
in the wake of the disastrous collapse of Buzzle, a nation-wide group of Apple
resellers, which Apple Australia placed in receivership, after the group amassed debts
of $AUD30 million ($US15 million) to Apple Australia. Bowley was previously Marketing
Director at Apple's Australian operation, having also worked for Mitsui.
The SMH story reports that there are rumors that Bowley's replacement might be a
Cupertino executive, although Apple is apparently looking at a range of candidates
from both inside and outside the company.
Bowley is apparently leaving Apple Oz in better condition than he found it, with the
company reporting a good last quarter. Apple is the second-largest supplier of
notebooks in the country (behind Toshiba).
Apple Australia was ranked 833 of the top 2000 firms in Australia in 2001, and
employed 174 people. Its revenues in the 12 months to September 2001 were over $AUD229
million.
