A 1/4-Inch Thick PowerBook 12.1? I Want One!

Plaudits for Mini-Me.
Rob Pegoraro's generally very positive review of the PowerBook G4/12.1, aka 'Mini-Me',
also contains some oddities that the Washington Post's sub-editors obviously missed.
According to the story, Mini-Me is "About 11 inches wide, 85/8 inches deep and less
than a quarter-inch thick." Hm. That'd be revolutionary, wouldn't it?
Pegoraro praises the PB's keyboard, its detailed attention to speaker and port
placement, as well as the power adapter. The PowerBook, he says, looks like it "was
not manufactured so much as sculpted out of solid metal." They used to say the same of
the Porsche 911 ['hewn from a single block of steel'].
Bluetooth and DVD-R also get honorable mentions, particularly the DVD-R option in a
portable in its price range. Pegoraro does mention, however, that he couldn't get the
PowerBook's SuperDrive to write DVD-RW. We've canvassed this issue previously on IGM;
the workaround is to use Disc Copy or Toast, rather than Disc Burner, which doesn't
seem to support RW. The 'slowness' of the audio CDR burn (21 minutes for a 66-minute
CD) he mentions may also be because he probably used iTunes, which can take a while to
rip audio from CDs; or, alteratively, it converts MP3s into AIFF files before burning
(Toast doesn't).
