Microsoft to Deliver Exchange Support in Office v.X Upgrade?

Conflicting information on the future of Office comes out of Redmond.
c|net reports that Microsoft will provide support for its MS Exchange Server, as it
gears up for a revamp of the Office v.X suite this summer.
However, militating against this is the somewhat-startling revelation contained in
Apple's SEC 10-Q filing Monday which has Cupertino warning that future versions of
Office v.X may - may - be under reconsideration at Redmond. c|net notes this extract
from the 10-Q statement:
"Accordingly, Microsoft's interest in producing application software for the Mac OS
following expiration of the agreements may be influenced by Microsoft's perception of
its interests as the vendor of the Windows operating system," Apple said in a filing
Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "Discontinuance [sic] of
Microsoft Office and other Microsoft products for the Macintosh platform would have an
adverse effect on the company's net sales and results of operations."
While Microsoft has confirmed it is working on the next version of Mac Office, details
regarding its feature set are not readily available. Corporate and education Mac
customers consistently request OS X support for Exchange Server. Exchange is readily
accessible under OS 9 using Office 2001, however. In OS X, however, users need resort
to Outlook. Some months ago, various sources reported that MS were looking to
integrate Exchange server support into Entrourage, the Mac-only mail/news/organizer
that is available on OS X exclusively.
MS product manager Jessica Sommer is quoted as saying that ""We couldn't let it wait
any longer," to incorporate Exchange support into the Office v.X suite. Entourage was
viewed as the most efficient way of achieving this. Entourage has been popular as an
individual application, leading Microsoft to release it as a separate piece of retail
software.
The Entourage update, scheduled for this summer, will not be compatible with the
Windows version of Outlook, however.
On the next version of Office: Mac, Sommers said that she did not anticipate that ir
would deviate from the usual 18-24 month schedule for major new releases of Mac OFfice
software.
