Google tops Apple in branding poll
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

The world's most-popular search topped a long list of perennial favorites

Reuters reports that the Internet search engine Google was voted "brand of the year"
in a poll conducted by Interbrand, a British marketing agency. The web's most-popular
search engine topped Apple, which ranked second, as well as Coca-Cola, third.

"Started by a couple of techies, Google is kind enough to hide its high-tech interior
from the public and give us nothing but a friendly, easy to use, clear, clean
exterior," Interbrand's Robin Rusch is quoted by Reuters as saying.

The poll, which included 1,315 respondents described as professionals and students in
72 countries, were asked which brand had made the most impact on their lives in 2002.

However, as Reuters notes, the poll was taken on-line and this could explain in part
Google's good fortune. The news agency as posited that Apple's second-place showing
was helped by its legions of web-savy users.

Regarding Apple, Rusch is quoted as saying, "[Apple's] steady array of new product
releases and cheeky David-to-Goliath positioning makes it hard not to notice and
perhaps explains why our readers tend to favor it."

In the survey, Google polled 15 percent, Apple, 14 and Coca-Cola 12 percent. Starbucks
and Ikea came in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Editor's note: Conspiracy! That's what it is...

As an aside, what's the web tie-in that explains Coke's third-place showing?
