Three geeks, a telescope and an 11-year-old Mac

A shadowy, closely-analyzed photo of the doomed Columbia space shuttle was captured
using a retail telescope and a 68000 Mac
The Associated Press (AP) reports that a grainy photo which shows a suspicious bulge
on the leading edge of one of the space shuttle Columbia's wings was taken by three
researchers, a commercially available 3.5-inch telescope and an 11-year-old Mac.
Taken on Feb 1 at the Air Force's Starfire Optical Range at the Kirtland Air Force
Base just before the ill-fated spacecraft broke up in the upper atmosphere, the photo
has been the focus of much speculation and controversy.
"We were not asked by NASA to do this," Robert Fugate, the optical range's technical
director, is quoted as saying "There was no official project or tasking to do this.
The people who work here are geeks. This was an opportunity to look at a rapidly
moving object and try to take a picture of it. That's really all it was."
Columbia and its crew were lost Feb 1 after the spaceship broke up in the upper
atmosphere for an undetermined reason.
Editor's note: It's fairly amazing that one of the first pieces of this puzzle to
emerge was the product of three guys essentially just fooling around. That the image
was captured using a dinosaur Mac and a hobbyist telescope makes it all the more so.
