G4 Cube: The 'Internal/External' SuperDrive
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
February 13th 2003

An alternative to the costly slot-load DVD-R.

Rich C, Cubist and Homepager @ .mac, has achieved what he (rightly) calls the 'Holy
Grail' of Cubism: getting a SuperDrive working on the internal bus of the G4 Cube.

There's a catch: this involves dangling an IDE cable out of your Cube and some kind of
enclosure for the DVD-R. Plus a split power cable. Happily, the hardware you need for
this project is all readily available from any PC store for pennies.

Now, a slot-load from a PowerBook would seem an obvious choice for the Cube, but Rich
chose the more practical and inexpensive way. He bought a stock Pioneer 105 (the
latest model), which, at $190 after rebate, is less than half the price of a slot
load. The 105 also burns at 4x instead of 2x. So far, so good. Also, when those 16x or
20x DVD-Rs start shipping in 2004, it'll be a cinch to whack in a faster drive.

So, what are the bonuses? iDVD works of course, as the IDE SuperDrive is on the
internal bus. And DVD Studio Pro, if you want it (the latter also works with any
external drive). Unlimited storage capacity. Support for double-sided 9.4GB DVD-R
discs. DVD-RW. The list goes on.

Rich has posted an installation guide, complete with lots of pictures. Get to it.
