Napster Lives: Roxio
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
February 25th 2003
Under New Management - Not the Napster you knew.
Roxio will relaunch Napster, the music file-sharing service it purchased in 2002,
after the original company went bankrupt. Roxio will package Napster as a "legitimate
pay service", according to a Reuters story.
"We're expecting to launch the service before the end of the year," spokeswoman
Kathryn Kelly told Reuters. "But we're not relaunching until we can establish it as a
legal service."
Roxio is reportedly discussing options with the five biggest record labels.
Pay-per-song is Roxio's plan, although the file format, pricing and range are unclear
at this point.
Analysis: Pay-per-song has been tried already, and it hasn't been particularly
successful. Clearly, the cost of web-delivered music is still too high. But the
success of services such as Limewire and Kazaa show the demand for music sharing is
insatiable.
