Apple's recycling program in the US

Without a hint of fanfare, the mothership has begun a recycling program for consumers
MacsOnly reports that Apple has begun a consumer recycling program to complement its
existing education effort. The mothership's Environmental Health and Safety
Department, through its Recycling Group, has developed a program ? the Apple Equipment
Recycling for the US ? whereby consumers can arrange to have their legacy, surplus
Macs recycled.
In a nutshell, a user arranges to have their Mac shipped through Apple's recycling
contractor, Metech International, an ISO 14001-certified company. Pick up and shipping
costs the user a nominal fee of $30. The packaging of monitors, CPUs, laptops, mice
and keyboards, all of which are covered under program, for shipment is the user's
responsibility.
Paying the $30 fee entitles the user to ship "one box" of computer equipment for
recycling and those with "a lot" of equipment (ie more than one box) they want to
dispose of to contact Metech directly.
"Our recycling partner on this program receives all of the equipment, inventories it
and prepares it for recycling," states the related Apple webpage. "This process
diverts 85 to 90 percent of each unit from landfill and into beneficial uses in other
markets."
Apple already has recycling programs in Europe, where it is mandatory, and Japan.
Editor's note: It's exceedingly odd that Apple hasn't marketed this program.
