With full Pentium emulation, this utility could displace Virtual PC
Recently, the Mac community has experienced a great deal of angst over the sale of
Connectix' Virtual PC assets to Microsoft. However, a new PC emulation utility has
appeared that could take the sting out of Redmond's acquisition, OpenOSX.org's WinTel.
With full Pentium and Jaguar compatibility, WinTel has been tested with the full
palette of M$ operating systems: 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP.
"We have developed a tutorial for installing Windows 98/2K/XP (though we do not
recommend XP Pro becuase it is much slower)," OpenOSX.org's WinTel product page
advises.
Features include:
? Full Pentium emulation;
? You may install your choice of Pentium-based software;
? Easy-to-use configuration graphical user interface;
? Tested with Windows 95/98/NT/2K/XP; and
? Mac OS X Native, accelerated for AltiVec.
Moreover, this just-shipped utility arrives with "10 different popular open-source x86
operating systems" pre-installed: FreeBSD, Redhat Linux, GHU Hurd, MuLinux, FreeDOS,
PicoBSD, Minx, NetBSD, Debian Linux and DLX Linux.
Perhaps WinTel's most-impressive feature is drag-n-drop compatibility with "any"
Virtual PC file, which implies that existing hard disk images and/or their contents
are useable under this open-source PC emulator.
Recommended system requirements are modest at a 400MHz or faster G4 and it's priced at
a reasonable $30. WinTel 1.0 can be downloaded here.
Editor's note: Networking and printer support are two glaring omissions from Wintel's
feature list. Also, there isn't specific mention of MMX-extension support.
