Sonnet reduces G4 upgrade prices

Competition in the upgrade segment has been hot and doesn't look to cool down anytime
soon
Sonnet has announced that is has lowered prices by as much as $100 on its entire line
of Encore/ST G4 upgrades. According to the company's PR spin, "These strategic price
adjustments maintain Sonnet?s market leadership by setting the industry?s best
price/performance standard for Macintosh enhancement products."
Sonnet?s new lower prices on Encore/ST upgrades are as follows:
... Encore/ST G4 800 Mhz $369.95 (was: $399.95)
... Encore/ST G4 1.0 Ghz $569.95 (was: $599.95)
... Encore/ST G4 1.2 Ghz $669.95 (was: $799.95)
The Encore/ST line of products is compatible with the AGP Graphics, Gigabit Ethernet,
Digital Audio, QuickSilver 2001, Cube (special kit required) and server G4s (not
including the Xserve).
Even as their prices fall, Sonnet is still offering a free 32MB Piccolo USB Flash
Drive with every Encore/ST purchased between the dates of Feb 1 and Mar 31. Everyone
that purchases an Encore/ST 800 MHz, 1.0 GHz, or 1.2 GHz product in the civilized
world is eligible to receive a free Sonnet Piccolo 32MB USB Flash Drive. Do read the
offer's fine print lest you be disappointed.
Editor's note: Competition is good! With three companies vying for your upgrade
dollars, prices have come down quickly in the months since last fall when 1GHz-plus
CPUs began shipping in volume.
The downside is that refurbished and second-hand Mac prices, at least for 100MHz and
higher bus machines, at least to this pundit's ever-searching eye, have remained high,
which makes building your own "after-market" Mac somewhat less inviting.
Also, more competition in the APG upgrade market would be very welcome, though here
too prices aren't nearly as high as they once were. Take Other World's $168 price for
an ATI Radeon 9000 card for example.
