Apple's music service gets 'industry approval'

Previous rumors of an Apple-branded pay-to-play service appear on the mark
Bloomberg reports, quoting the LA Times that Apple's "new online music service" has
won support from executives at record companies. Reportedly industry insiders consider
it a way to prevent piracy.
According to Bloomberg (a search of the LA Times returned no hits), Apple has
developed a service that makes downloading and buying music files easier. The service
uses technology that makes it impossible to play a file on more than one computer.
Bloomberg says, without citing sources, that four of the five major record labels have
pledged to offer their music through the Apple service.
Editor's note: Will this new service come to market in the company of new iPods? This
pundit is betting the answer is "yes."
Will a new version of iTunes be unleashed or will hidden features be revealed by a
dot-update? I'm betting on the latter.
Also, what file format will be used? This pundit is betting mp4 will be the flavor of
the day.
Previous rumors stated that Apple will charge $0.99 per song and collect these
"micro-payments" (remember when McDonalds advertised "lunch for under a buck"?) using
its "one-click" payment that it licensed from Amazon.
So, will you subscribe or is this another .Mac debacle in the making?
