Sony Wants to Buy PalmSource?

Unsure of whether Apple is a hardware or software company, the new Sony CEO has a
steep learning curve ahead of him.
Nobuyuki Idei, CEO and Chairman of Sony, has stated that he would buy Palm's software
division "if they would sell".
Interviewed at the World Economic Forum by the Always On Network, the Sony CEO
expressed doubts about the use of Symbian on Sony cell phones, while using PalmOS on
their PDAs. He said that he wanted to buy either one or the other. But the different
software on Sony's two digital devices makes it extremely difficult to develop the
long-awaited Sony combined PDA-cell phone - if it exists.
Apple gets a side-swipe from the Sony chairman. In the interview, he says, " Palm is
like Apple�we don�t know if they are a software company or a hardware company. But
they [Palm] have now split in two.
The Sony CEO also canvasses selling music over the internet. There are two more parts
to the interview arriving over the next couple of days.
Analysis: That 'hardware/software' company has just figured out how to sell music over
the net. The Sony Chairman should realize that Apple is both: a hardware and a
software company. Mr. Idei needs Sony R&D and Marketing down to the nearest Apple
Retail Store, and immediately order an iMac, an iPod and a copy of iLife. He may learn
a thing or two.
