More 10.2.4 Problems? iBook Bitten by a Battery Bug
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
March 5th 2003
Has your battery life been affected by the 10.2.4 install?
While Apple has officially acknowledged the 10.2.4 bug on Macs (which lose their
date/time after each restart, sending them back to 1969-70), a workaround has been
posted on KBase. However, a potentially more serious bug has apparently emerged which
seems to affect iBooks' battery life.
Posts at Apple's discussion boards note substantial deterioration in battery life on
iBooks with 10.2.4 installed. One poster says that their iBook's battery went from a
full charge of around 2 hours to 45-50 minutes.
Different iBooks seem to be affected in various ways. Another reader said that a
battery reporting 92% went to sleep, as if a 'reserve battery warning' had come up. On
reconnection to the AC, the battery charge was reported at 0%.
One thing fairly common to iBook owners reporting the problem is 640MB RAM installed.
However, this is by no means universal. Another common complaint which may be at the
source includes the hard drive never spinning down.
Analysis: We can't confirm this bug, but will wait and see whether Apple issues Kbase
article on this one. In the meantime, refraining from installing 10.2.4 until the dust
has settled is probably not a bad idea.
10.2.4 does seem to have more than its fair share of serious bugs. Obviously, all
software has bugs in it, but these (date/time/battery) can seriously affect workflows.
Cupertino sound like they need to acknowledge and get a 10.2.5 fix out in short order.
