300 Megabytes Per Second: SCSI's Not Dead Yet

SCSI Trade Association strikes back at Serial ATA.
The SCSI Trade Association (CSITA) has defined the next-generation SCSI standard, to
be known as Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). The new standard will move data at speeds up
to 300MB/ps, reports MacBidouille.
Plans for Serial Attached SCSI have been on the drawing board since December 2001.
Products which can utilize SAS include "HBAs, RAID controllers, enclosures, drives and
expanders", according to the CSITA.
THe CSITA plan to have evaluation units by the end of 2003, with products coming to
market in 2004. The Association have produced a FAQ which gives you the low-down on
all of SAS's advantages. There's also a brief overview PDF which outlines the need for
SAS at CSITA's site.
Analysis: Clearly, the move to SAS has been the success of Serial ATA, itself an
interim standard. FireWire 800, a viable fast RAID setup, will also compete with SCSI
setups. However, high-end servers and really, really pro users working with broadcast
video and film need this kind of bandwidth. SAS dwarfs FireWire 800's 100MB/ps, but
lower-end SCSI solutions (Ultra/LVD) have fallen out of favor in the 1U or entry-level
server market. Apple doesn't even sell a desktop Power Mac server with SCSI available
anymore, while the XServe intro specifically emphasized the fact that the relative
cost-efficiency of ATA drives versus SCSI made the decision to go with ATA a
no-brainer.
