Apple took 3.8% of desktop sales in January
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

The mothership's market share continues to show improvement

Bloomberg reports that Macs accounted for 3.8 percent of US January desktop sales as
ranked in dollar terms. This places Apple in the number five spot in the US market.

The report does not mention unit sales figures, but it's likely we'll see these
numbers trickle out over the next week or so as the wire services add their spin to
publicly-release market share summaries from the various tracking services.

Oddly, and perhaps not, Apple and its strong iBook and PowerBook product lines didn't
register in the portable top five. The top selling brand was Toshiba with 26.6 percent
and the number five brand, Sony, took 8.4 percent.

Perhaps Apple's tardy 17-inch PowerBook (and thousands of deferred orders) accounts in
part for the company's absence from the list. Then again, when was the last time the
mothership cracked the top five of the highly concentrated portable market in the US?
