Corel: The dream that was

The Canadian software maker is in talks with venture capital firms regarding a take
over
Macworld UK reports that Corel is negotiating with two venture capital firms, Vector
Holdings and CIBC World Markets, about a take over of the company.
In its various incarnations over the last 10 years, the company has positioned itself
as a would-be Redmond slayer, Linux champion and graphics software maker. None of
these avenues have panned out for the software maker, which was founded in 1985.
Its flagship image-editing program, CorelDraw, is still popular with users. For a
number of years, a Mac version has been available though it never seriously challenged
Photoshop's dominance on the platform.
Development of Bryce and KPT Effects, which the company purchased several years back
from graphics legend Kay Krause, has largely languished and this latest development
calls into question their continued existence.
Editor's note: Hopefully, the depressing saga of Corel will end with its take over and
salvation by a quality management team.
