I don't have an answer but I sympathize. I have yet to use a browser that feels like it scales to the dozens of windows I have open. The UI doesn't scale, and the performance doesn't scale (the bogging down you mentioned).
Just today I relaunched a browser and audio started playing from one of the tabs it had reopened. I think it was a YouTube window. I was annoyed because one reason I installed a Flash blocker was to prevent auto-play, and also because I could not figure out for the life of me which tab was the source.
