FYI, I was able to successfully install 5.8.0. The only things 'special' I
did was modify the install paths a little (but the install is still all
under /usr/local). So I took your advice as far as that goes, and now that I
think about it I don't see why it should be a problem to just install all my
stuff in /usr/local like normal. I guess I had some aversion to it since I
remember reading somewhere in the Fink pages that it's not a good idea to
install stuff in /usr/local. Oh well it's working fine. Thanks everyone for
your help! :-)
