Mostly just because no one else mentioned it, I rather like to use Mahon's "ee" or "aee". Almost no learning curve but much superior to pico, IMHO. If you must use a GUI version, and can tolerate X-windows, there's even an "xee". I believe FreeBSD includes it as part of a nominal install. Rather wish that OS-X did too. --
