I don't see the need to avoid using the shell as I am running this in the shell and the are no non alphanumberic content (I stripped them out with regex) and this is not a web app.
Still, being very careful with system(STRING) is a good habit to get into. Personally I try to never use it, system(LIST) is much safer and you don't have to worry about quoting weirdnesses, so it's more cross-platform.
