Hi Sergey and others, if interested.
I decided to perform the test, read below.
Foreword: do you have any experience of MacBook Pro 13 compared to 14
with about the same CPU? it seems slower to me, even if it is about
1year newer than my 15". Of course, also newer OS version, who knows.

work, broke) so I cannot use these as comparisons
X11 is not the most robust thing, to put it mildly, but I would expect
gtk3 app to work with GUI, as long as gtk3 works on a given system.
(gtk4 is bad, so there anything can be broken randomly.)
I can try out of curiosity and see if it gonna work on powerpc.
I know X11 is not the best, but the goal is to understand were the issue
is. Meld is a complex python + GTK thing.
In the meanwhile I performed the test on my MBP 13" with 10.13. I
switched meld to +x11 -cocoa . THi requried a lot of rebuilding and was
not smooth, deactivating some packages, etc etc..
The result is that Meld run and works and is decently fast, almost
similar to Linux on comparable hardware. Quick in open syntax show.. no
problems.
It seems also more stable, but I will use it more next week and se better.
From this I would suppose that base python is running fine on darwing
and the whole "issue" comes from cocoa. I don't know if this from gtk or
fontconfig, harfbuzz or the gtk-python and packages. No idea, but it is
a first test.
If somebody wants to help, reproduce, has suggestions how to continue
investigation, welcome.
