I've just done a full check of my HD, using the Macs disk utility and
the more thorough Apple Hardware Test. Both passed with no errors, as
expected.
Then removed all traces of macports I could find on my machine, first by
checking the directories listed in the guide, then by doing a search for
"ports", ""macports" and "darwinports". Then reinstalled 1.9.2 from the
disk image I downloaded earlier. I checked with a "port installed" and
it found nothing.
I just did a port install of emacs, a couple of complaints with ncursesw
and ncurses, and had to go force activation for each. But it finally
installed and it ran with no errors when I opened it.
Error logs at bottom of mail.
I'm now trying gimp2, and I'm having a similar problem - 3rd log at
bottom. I can't empty out /opt/local/bin because there are other
programs in the same directory not put in there by macports. It's just
complained about gperf, while writing this mail. It's a bit tedious to
install like this... is there some other clean action I missed?

your port command isn't functioning so if you still intend to wipe out
current installation skip the uninstall part and go to the remove
part.
