A final remark for now: comparing xv's rendering with libjpeg 8d (sic) vs. libjpeg-turbo, the differences are rather easy to see. The turbo library gives a lighter/brighter looking image, that's also a bit washed out. In other words, libjpeg restitutes a bit more detail.
