quitting meld crashes x server

I have seen this for some months now:

opening/using the `meld' diff tool in xquartz works just fine. but when quitting meld xquartz quits 
as well. I now looked closer and

org.xquartz.log says:

Fatal server error:
(EE) Could not destroy window 236 (3).(EE)
(EE) Server terminated with error (1).

is this fixable in the meld port or should this be reported upstream?
