Great review. I just purchased my 5G nano yesterday and am going through the menus now. You're observations are correct. The speaker does cut off when you attach your earphones. Also, I was disappointed when I discovered it would not speak the favorites in the radio section, but since the text to speech engine generates the spoken menus on the computer side and then synchs this is to be expected. Apple would have to provide a way for you to id the stations in iTunes before you synch for it to work.
