One consideration is that, aside from battery life and a few iPad-only apps, the iPad offers no significant advantages (that I can think of) over the iPod. At the least, they are identical in terms of VO keystrokes, so hook a keyboard to the iPod and see what you think. I believe you said you have an iPod - if not, ignore me. <smile>
No, command-tab won't work, but go-h is your home button; press h twice while holding down the vo keys and you are in the App Switcher. It is kind of similar to the Application Chooser on the Mac. Certainly it is far less convenient, but the option is there. I like having a full computer for apps the iOS platform can't run (Xcode, some nice Youtube apps, etc) but those aren't a concern for you. However, someone mentioned external drives, and that's a great point. Also, iOS lacks commanders, so no assigning frequently used actions or even ApleScripts to gestures or keystrokes. Overall, because of the shortcut key support in apps Not necessarily in VO) I find the Mac or a Windows machine more efficient to use. That's just me though. Finally, the new Macbook Airs, and even the Pros from the brief times I've felt them, have very little in the way of vents or other holes. They use solid state drives, so have no moving internal parts except for some amazingly quiet fans you really can't access (the Airs seem to have no fans, but I could be wrong). Debris, then, is really not as much of a concern, and of course they make a myriad of cases for all these devices.
