Yes, the previous recipients list is a good way to go. You also used to be able to bring the mouse pointer while you're typing and control-click the mouse to get more options. However, under Yosemite this doesn't seem to work. Although it might be that I was just doing something differently when I tried it just now. Mouse clicking can often depend on a lot of variables which are not obvious to VoiceOver.
