I am not sure how old your iMac is or whether or not this would be a factor, 
but if I use cmd-r at restart and take the steps to reinstall, it is Yosemite 
that is indeed shown as the install that will be done, not Mavericks. So I 
don't think the problem is that Apple has failed to allow a Yosemite install 
but unfortunately I don't know what the problem may have been when you 
attempted this.

I had completely forgotten about system report so thanks for reminding me.
I have just gone to system report and of course everything under Audio now is 
absolutely fine but your suggestion of sending a screen dump the next time it 
happens is a good one.
Actually taking a snapshot  whilst everything is in good health may be  a  good 
 idea for comparison sake if it happens again.
